'B' is for Bonaire in the ABCs of the Netherlands Antilles, a reef rimmed island that offers, in addition to a vibrant undersea community, land-based activities to keep visitors busy when they come up for air. Book a sunset cruise, pick up snorkeling equipment and rent bikes in tiny Kralendijk, Bonaire's main town, and get busy.
Peddle along trails that wind around Bonaire's coastline for an independent tour of the island, or do some flamingo watching and walking in Washington Slagbaai National Park at the island's north end. Drive a loop around Bonaire if bubbling around under the sea leaves you washed out. Stop to visit Rincon, the oldest village in Bonaire, restored slave huts to the south and have a look at the salt pans stretching out along the southwest end before heading back to the amenities of Kralendijk.
With over 100 scuba sights and plenty of snorkeling surface to choose from, Bonaire is a diver's paradise. Get your license to submerge if you didn't arrive in Bonaire certified. Several operators rent equipment and air to divers and snorkellers.
Windsurfers can skim the sea in Lac Bay on the east shore, where winds blow consistently. Protected by Bonaire National Marine Park statutes, the bay is also popular with kayakers. Slide past mangroves, or set off to find your own secluded beach spot for an afternoon picnic. Klein Bonaire, just off the west shore, has powdery white sand beaches and plenty of places to snorkel when you need a break from paddling. Guided tours and lessons are available.
